Annual Gathering - Saint Paul’s Students Society (SPSS)
The society aims to support Christian students, many of whom are from abroad and disconnected from their home communities, by providing a platform for religious practice and community integration.
This year, eleven students came together for the event. The meeting commenced at St. Anne’s Monastery, where the group was warmly welcomed by the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers). Fr. David Neuhaus SJ delivered an insightful talk on living in the Holy Land, emphasizing cultural sensitivity in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the practice of religion in this unique environment. His perspective as a white South African Jew and convert enriched the presentation, sparking engaging discussions among the attendees.
Following this, Fr. Laurent Balas M. Afr. provided a historical overview of the sites the group would visit. The students then explored the pool of Bethesda and St. Anne’s Basilica, where they prayed for their families. Their journey continued to the Monastery of the Flagellation (Fortress Antonia), and from there, they walked the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Resurrection (Holy Sepulcher). The group then visited Dormition Abbey, where they enjoyed lunch, courtesy of the Benedictine Community there.
The day included stops at David’s Tomb and the Upper Room, with a final gathering to express gratitude to the guide and the event organizers, Sr. Anna and Fr. Matthew.
The meeting offered a precious opportunity for face-to-face interaction among students who previously connected only online. Sharing conversations and prayers in person made the event a memorable and enriching experience for all participants.
