Flores de Mayo and Santa Cruzan celebrations at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Community Rehovot
The celebration was particularly poignant as it marked the community's recovery from a devastating fire that destroyed their tent (where they gather for mass and other activities) and all their equipment on 3 January this year. The feast was a testament to their strength and determination, as they successfully rebuilt the tent with the support of generous donors. The newly reconstructed tent was inaugurated and blessed during the celebration by Fr. Matthew Coutinho SDB, the Patriarchal Vicar for Migrants and Asylum Seekers in Israel representing the Patriarch. The tent is the symbol of a new beginning for the STCJ community. Many representatives from other Migrant communities in Israel were present – a sign of the broader church's solidarity with the STCJ congregation.
The festivities began with a Marian procession with representatives dressed according to the different titles of Mary our Blessed Mother and Queen Helena and Prince Constantino (both responsible for the finding of the Holy Cross). The festive mass was presided over by Fr. Angel Cortez OFM, who, in his characteristic friendly manner, reminded the congregation of the true essence of the feasts. His homily emphasized the importance of unity, faith, and cultural heritage, resonating deeply with those in attendance.
Following the Mass, a short entertainment program was held, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the members of the community who come from different nations and unite to make up the STCJ congregation. The program included traditional dances, songs, and performances that highlighted the diverse backgrounds and talents of the community members.
The festivities concluded with a sumptuous dinner, where attendees shared traditional Filipino and international dishes. This communal meal fostered a sense of fellowship and camaraderie, reinforcing the bonds among community members.
The celebration of 'Flores de Mayo' and 'Santa Cruzan' at St. Therese of Child Jesus was a powerful reminder of what a united community can achieve despite facing significant challenges. The event not only brought people together but also reignited the spirit of Christian community living among those who attended. The resilience and unity displayed by the STCJ community serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that strength and faith can overcome any calamity.
